Hi :) For starters..you have updated drivers for everything? Video Card..DirectX verson etc? Goto: Start | Run | dxdiag.exe (enter) ..run through the tests and make sure everything is running okay. You can try also running the game in a compatibility mode justs to see if it runs under them ..if you right click the gta3.exe and don't have the option for compat mode goto:
Start | Run | regsvr32
C:\winnt\AppPatch\slayerui.dll (enter)
Your %path% my be a bit different..then try running it under 98 compat mode for example..see if it makes any difference. I know though GTA3 works under 2K/XP fine in most cases. Also, if you don't have the latest patches: http://tinyurl.com/693p
<---- Hope this helps.

You've tried both methods above though, right? The GTA3 patch off that site and also the compat mode..and both don't work?

:puzzled:Yup m8
I really dont know what it could be...
I tried the compat mode for 98/2000/nt(95 wont work)
The blue screen comes up and then an error...
My card is compat with open gl/d3d/transform and lighting....
i really am puzzled by it...
Also why doesnt the official site give any support for this kind of thing as iv heared that its given alot of people trouble on all o/s..?
Is there any where i can look up known problems like this on any other site cos the ones from here ive tried ...
Also is there a certain refresh rate i should be using?
thanks :ninja:

Okay so game is patched to new version, you have updates DirectX Drivers..Soundcard..Video Card etc. Have you tried switching between the different modes..tried running the game with OpenGL or just with D3D? Check what you have running in the background too something in the system tray where the clock is *might* be buggering with it. or by going to: Start / Run / taskmgr.exe and checking the list. What I would do personally also is..you said your friend is running it fine..(if in there) export your friends registry keys for GTA3 and match them up with yours and see if it's a small configuration error. I know when I had GTA2 installed on my 98 box..it worked perfect..wouldn't work at all on my win2k box, I exported the keys off my 98 box ..reimported them under 2K ..changed a couple things and the game worked perfect.
Also try changing your Display Resolution in Windows and see if still stalls. Wouldn't hurt either after the game crashes going to: Start / Run / eventvwr.msc <--- and just look down the list at the different things and see if anything there COULD be related.

Hey fellas,
I think i know what the problem is.....
But i dont know how to sort it out...
I have lost agp acceleration in dxdiag, I know i had it workin when i got my card.
my motherboard is ks75a Ami bios
I have also installed the latest drivers for everything...
I took the game to work on the same o/s
with sp3, dx9,agp acceleration on in dxdiag.
It worked fine...
Plz help me sort this out:cry:
thx alot

Right click the desktop..go under "Properties" / "Settings" / "Advanced" / "troubleshooting" and max *sure* that Full Acceleration is turned on. Also did you try what I said about looking in event viewer after the crash and seeing if anything showed up that could be related? When you run GTA3 does it sound like it's having a hard time reading it off the cdrom? You should still be able to run the game without AGP texture acceleration, I'm running it here fine without it for testing. Do you have an onboard soundcard? or a PCI soundcard ..or both? If both ...try switching to the onboard, then trying the game..also make sure you have updated drivers for each of them for whatever you have.

WooT...
I have finally got it workin..... 8):excited:
The only thing is is that it runs pretty poor.
My specs are well above average...
Is there any patches for frame rate?
It still runs quite well.
It was my soundcard, I took it out and it worked fine...
Thx all for the help....
Oh yeah, 1 more thing......
If i put updates and mods it wont run....
I get the same error like "gta3.exe" error
If i cant run the mods....Then thats fine but if there is somthing i can do to play em i would be gratefull of the help....
Thx again for the help...

Ahh..glad it's finally running :) You've prolly already got the game patched to the latest version if not: http://www.take2games.com/support/patches/GTA3patch1.1.zip <--- I'd also recommend picking up some RAM some time..another 256MB stick..esp if you do play alot of games it will help out..I'm running GTAIII on a P3-933/512MB RAM/Geforce 256 64MB card and it runs pretty good..not great..but doesn't drop frames etc. If more RAM isn't an option..make sure any programs in win2k running in the background that you don't need running close down before playing GTAIII...instead of having proggies using up RAM that could be going towards your game. Check this program out also ==> http://www.gta3.gamehorizons.net/files/tools/highfps(v5.1).zip <---- really popular app that can speed up GTAIII by taking out certain graphical objects that really don't matter or are going to make the game any less fun..and in turn speed it up because you don't have all that extra crap to draw. In your GTA Options make sure "Trails" is turned off / "Frame Sync" is turned off ..."Frame limiter" try it with off..if performance gets worse..turn it back on. I've got subtitles shut off too and wide screen. Another thing you COULD do..although with the above methods you don't have too, you could setup multiple hardware profiles in 2K ...under "Control Panel / System / Hardware / Hardware Profiles" make a profile called "GAMES" or whatever ya wanna call it ...then setup the profile to be shown as a choice when the system boots. Then you can run "services.msc" in 2K from the "Run" box...ANY services you do NOT need(check here: http://www.blackviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htm <--- for details)...you can right click goto properties then tell it not to run under that specific profile..alot of the default services you don't need and that in turn again..uses up more RAM...you don't have to do the profile thing..it's another option. These should get ya started though, btw..what "mods" where ya running that wern't working? Hope This helps :)
