i've been using a intellimouse optical for a couple of years, and the two extra buttons on the side are invaluable in games.

so much so that one button appears to be wearing out and doesn't always respond...

i've had to reassign my key binds :o to have a less critical key on the dodgy button (it was forward - a few nights of continuous Morrowind questing seemed to be too much for it!)

i was wondering what binds people prefer for 1st person shooters? i'm finding it hard to come up with a workable alternative to what i've been using...

ultimately the design of the keyboard gets us - you can only press two to three buttons simultaneously can't you. (i guess the dim wits who designed it originally, while clever, never thought one day you'd need to press crouch+forward+run+shoot+jump all at the same time....)

i use the left hand on the keyboard, & right on mouse.

D & F are strafe left & right, Q & A are jump and duck, R reload, Z is prone, space is Use, G drop weapon... all clustered over there so i can get the weapon hotkeys easily (lots of FPS games have fixed assignments for the number keys, so you're stuck with them, at least that was the original reasoning)

it's acutally quite effective once you're used to it, and when my mouse is working, i'd use the two extra buttons it has for forward & back, and mouse1 as fire, mouse2 as alternate fire.

the great thing about that is it means i can just about get by with the mouse alone, leaving my left hand for eating crisps/pies, talking on phone etc. OK i play a bit like a noob then as i can't strafe or jump, but hey you need to eat every couple of days innit? :duh:

this layout might seem a bit wonky! i'd appreciate any suggestions that might enhance gun-toting mayhem! and anyway, i'm just curious to hear what binds other people use ;)

I use the following:

Left hand: R for up, S for left, G for right, spacebar for back

Right hand: Left mouse button for shoot, Right for jump, middle for alternate weapon.

For leans and stuff it depends how fat your fingers are :)
