I just experienced this problem recently, and thought I should share the explanation for why it was messing my machine up...
I had just uninstalled a printer driver, but unfortunately, the uninstall process didn't remove all traces of it. So the program files were all gone, but the printer still was listed under "Printers and Faxes" under my control panel. For some reason, the nonexistent printer was still trying to "print" the last document I'd printed out. So, Windows was apparently running in circles trying to find where the files for this missing printer were located, causing my hard drive to churn continuously and wmiprvse.exe to take up 80 percent or more of my CPU power. The solution was to (obviously) cancel the print job from the control panel's printers/fixes menu, then manually remove the printer from the list. After that, everything returned to normal. In this case, it was a printer that was causing the problem, but I assume it could also be caused by other programs that didn't uninstall properly. If you can remember uninstalling a program or driver right before having this problem, I'd recommend going back and removing any traces of it manually (if you know where to find them), or alternately, doing a system restore to a point before you removed the software. |

Your post saved me hours of frustration. Here is what I did. I looked in my Printers & Faxes and found a printer that I did not have rights to anymore with 54 jobs in the spooler. I could not cancel the documents so I deleted the printer in printers and faxes. Then I stopped the spooler service and in about a minute my CPU useage returned to normal. Then I started the spooler service and now I am in great shape. Thanks again.
PS. Before I deleted the printer I looked in add remove programs and verified that this printer was not in there. It was not so I just deleted it. |

Also could experience issue in Windows Server 2008 on VMware ESX
I just came across the same issue. If you created a Windows 2008 Server VM before it was truly supported and set it as a 2003 machine, the ethernet driver is not compatible in 08. It still works....but your wmiprvse will go crazy. Just make sure your ESX is up to date and change the VM type to 08 and make sure your VM tools are updated as well.

ny other suggestions?
Mine is not a virus, not a printer problem, I don't have SBS installed, It is related to windows system resource manager though, as stopping this service resolves the problem. |
